Click-to-WhatsApp ads are Facebook and Instagram ads whose button opens a WhatsApp chat with your business. The customer taps the ad, WhatsApp opens with your number and a suggested first message, and they send it to start the conversation. They are one type of click to message ad.
How click-to-WhatsApp ads work
You need a WhatsApp Business account connected to the Facebook Page that runs the ads. For most small businesses that is the free WhatsApp Business app on a phone. Larger operations use the WhatsApp Business Platform, often called the WhatsApp Business API, through a provider so several staff and a CRM can share one number.
In Ads Manager you choose a messaging destination of WhatsApp at ad set level, under the Traffic, Engagement, Leads or Sales objective. You write the pre-filled message, such as “Hi, I’d like a quote for a boiler service”, and Meta delivers the ad to people it predicts will start a chat. Results are usually reported as messaging conversations started.
On the Business Platform, conversations that begin from one of these ads have, at the time of writing (October 2026), a free window for the business’s replies. Meta has changed WhatsApp pricing several times, so check the current terms with your provider before planning around them.
Because the chat happens inside WhatsApp, Meta cannot see what follows by itself. It knows a conversation began, not whether the customer booked. That is why recording outcomes, covered below, makes such a difference to how well the campaign learns over time.
Why it matters for a UK business
WhatsApp is how a great many UK customers already talk to tradespeople, salons, tutors, letting agents and takeaways. Starting there removes a step: no form, no waiting for an email reply, and the business gets the customer’s mobile number with the first message, arriving as a familiar +44 contact in your chat list.
That convenience cuts both ways. The customer expects a quick, human answer, and a chat left for hours feels like a closed door. The phone number is personal data under UK GDPR, so store it with the enquiry, keep it only as long as you need it, and do not add it to promotional broadcasts unless you have a valid basis under PECR.
Common mistakes
- Running the ads to a WhatsApp Business app on one person’s phone, with no cover when they are busy on a job or off sick.
- A vague pre-filled message such as “Hi”, which gives you nothing to reply to.
- Counting conversations started as leads, without recording which became quotes and paid work.
- Copying chat customers into a broadcast list for offers without permission.
- No business hours or away message, so evening chats get silence until morning.
How to act on it
Connect the WhatsApp number to your Facebook Page in Meta Business Suite and confirm it shows as linked before building the ad. Write a pre-filled message that tells you what the person wants, and set a greeting and away message that say when you will reply.
Keep a simple record of each chat’s outcome. If you can, send those outcomes back to Meta through the Conversions API as offline conversions, so it can learn which chats turn into customers. I plan and manage these campaigns through my click-to-WhatsApp and Messenger ads service, including the reply process behind them.
