Free listings are unpaid product listings that Google shows across its shopping surfaces using the data in your Merchant Center account. They can appear in the Shopping tab, in Google Search results, in Google Images and Lens, and elsewhere, and you pay nothing when someone clicks.
How free listings work
You give Google your product data in one of three ways: a product feed, a direct integration from a platform such as Shopify or WooCommerce, or by letting Merchant Center read the structured data on your product pages. In Merchant Center you then make sure free listings are switched on as one of the ways your products are shown.
Free listings use the same product data specification and the same policies as Shopping ads. A product that is disapproved will not show in either. Which listing appears for a search depends on how relevant the product data is, along with signals such as price, stock, delivery and returns information, and product ratings where you have them.
Shops with physical premises can also show free local listings, which tell nearby shoppers what is in stock in store. That needs a local inventory feed and a linked Business Profile.
Merchant Center reports show clicks from free listings separately from ads. Merchant Center can also add its own tracking parameter to links so your analytics tool can recognise the visits, which helps keep them apart from paid traffic.
Why it matters
For an independent UK shop, free listings are a way to appear beside national retailers for product searches without an advertising budget. They are not a replacement for SEO on your product pages or for paid Shopping, but they are low-cost visibility built from data you need to maintain anyway.
They also show UK shoppers the things they compare before clicking: the price, the delivery cost and the returns window. A shop that has filled these in properly often looks more trustworthy than one that has not, even at the same price. In Google Images and Lens, where people often search with a photo, a clean main image does much of the selling, so image quality matters more than many shops expect.
Common mistakes
- Installing a platform’s Google app and assuming everything works, without opening the Merchant Center diagnostics.
- Letting stock and price in Merchant Center fall behind the website, which leads to disapprovals and, if it keeps happening, account warnings.
- Leaving shipping and returns settings empty, so listings show less information than competitors’.
- Structured data on product pages that disagrees with the feed, for example a different price.
- Counting free listing sales inside paid Shopping results, which flatters the ads.
How to act on it
Verify and claim your website in Merchant Center, then check free listings are enabled. Work through the diagnostics until there are no errors on products you want to sell. Fill in delivery costs and times and your returns policy. Check that the product schema on your pages matches the data you send Google.
After that, look at the free listings performance report each month to see which products get clicks and which get none. Products with impressions but few clicks usually need better titles, images or pricing context. I include Merchant Center and free listings in ecommerce SEO work, because the product data that powers them is the same data that helps your product pages in organic search.
