Instagram Explore is the tab where Instagram shows posts, Reels and accounts it predicts a person will enjoy from people they do not yet follow. As a Meta ad placement, it lets your ad appear in that discovery space, either within the Explore grid itself or in the feed of similar posts that opens when someone taps a tile.
How Instagram Explore works
Ads Manager splits Explore into two placements. Explore home places your ad as a tile in the main grid, marked as sponsored, among the content Instagram has picked for that person. Explore places it in the scrolling feed that appears after someone taps a post from the grid, so your ad sits among posts on a similar subject.
Image and video ads can run there, though the formats allowed differ between the two placements. Meta has generally required Explore to be bought alongside the Instagram Feed rather than on its own; check the options when you build the ad set, as placement rules change. In most accounts Explore is simply part of Advantage+ placements, and Meta decides how much of the budget it receives.
The mindset is different from the home feed. People in Explore are not catching up with friends; they are browsing for something new. That makes them more open to an unfamiliar brand, but also quick to move on if a tile does not catch the eye.
Why it matters
Explore suits businesses whose products sell on looks or curiosity: fashion, beauty, food and drink, interiors, travel and gifts. A small UK homeware brand or a London bakery with strong photography can reach people who have never heard of it but already browse that kind of content.
It matters less for services that need explaining, such as accountancy or a plumbing call-out, and for local businesses with a tight service area. Explore is also a smaller source of impressions than the main feed or Reels, so it rarely changes an account’s results on its own. Knowing that stops you over-investing time in it.
Explore also places ads among content on subjects a person is already engaging with, so the creative needs to match the mood. A Bristol interiors shop whose ad looks like the room photographs people are browsing will feel at home; a stock image with a price banner across it will not. In that sense Explore rewards the same thing organic Instagram does: content people would choose to look at.
Common mistakes
- Creative that only works full-size. In the Explore home grid your ad is a small tile and has to make sense at that size.
- Heavy text on the image, which becomes unreadable as a thumbnail.
- Judging Explore from a tiny slice of spend and switching it off, or the reverse, forcing budget into it.
- Expecting it to work for a service that needs a long explanation.
- Ignoring placement results entirely and never checking where the money went.
How to act on it
Leave Explore inside your automatic placements unless results show a clear problem. Once a month, look at the placement breakdown in Ads Manager to see what share of spend and results Explore delivered, and compare it with Feed and Reels ads.
Design with the grid in mind. Make sure the first frame of a video, or the main image, reads clearly when cropped small: one subject, strong contrast, minimal text. If you want different crops for different placements, placement asset customisation lets you supply them. Building creative that works across Feed, Stories, Reels and Explore is part of how I run Instagram ads management.
