A near me search is a search that asks for something close to the searcher, such as “dentist near me”, “coffee near me” or “garage open now near me”. Google answers it using the searcher’s location, from their phone or connection, rather than any place named in the words.

How near me searches work

The phrase “near me” does not describe a place, so Google does not look for pages containing the words. It reads the request as “show me this, close to where I am” and looks for businesses that match the category and are nearby. That is why these searches almost always bring up the local pack, the map with a short list of businesses.

The ranking follows the same three factors Google uses for all local results: relevance, distance and prominence. For near me searches, distance carries particular weight, because the searcher has said outright that closeness matters. Proximity is why someone standing on Upper Street sees different cafés from someone a mile away in Holloway.

Variations add more detail. “Open now” makes your hours a filter, so a business with wrong or missing hours can drop out. Words such as “best” or “24 hour” tend to push the results towards well-reviewed businesses or those whose hours fit. Many people now leave “near me” off altogether, because Google already assumes local intent for queries like “pharmacy”.

Why it matters

Near me searches usually come from people ready to act: they want to visit, call or book soon, and often they are on a phone. For a shop, clinic, restaurant or trade, they are among the most commercially valuable searches a business can appear for.

They also explain why a business cannot rank everywhere. A London business will show for near me searches around its location, but not for people on the other side of the city, however good its website. Being visible a few streets from your premises and nowhere else is normal, not a fault.

Common mistakes

  • Stuffing “near me” into pages. Titles such as “Plumber Near Me” read oddly and do not help, because Google answers these searches from location, not page wording.
  • Building a “near me” page. A page aimed at the phrase itself has no place to be near, so it cannot match the searcher’s need.
  • Wrong hours. An “open now” search filters out businesses whose hours are missing or wrong, especially on bank holidays.
  • Vague categories. If your primary category on your profile does not match what people search for, you are less relevant whatever your distance.
  • Judging from your own desk. Searching near me from your premises shows you at your best. Check from where your customers are.

How to act on it

Focus on your Google Business Profile. Choose the most precise primary category, list your services, keep regular and special hours correct, add real photos and keep reviews coming in. These are the things a near me search draws on.

On your website, describe your services and location in plain words: what you do, where you are and which areas you serve. That supports relevance and prominence without any need to write “near me”.

Then measure from several points around your premises with a rank grid tool, and watch calls and direction requests in your profile’s performance report. If you want this handled, my local SEO service covers the profile, the site and the measurement.

Do and do not

Do

  • Keep your profile hours, including special hours, accurate
  • Make your categories and services match what people search for
  • Measure visibility from several points around your premises

Do not

  • Add 'near me' to page titles and headings
  • Create a page targeting 'near me' searches
  • Expect to appear for customers far from your location

Questions people ask about this

Do I need the words 'near me' on my website?

No. Google answers near me searches using the searcher's location and your business details, not the phrase on your page. Writing it into titles and headings reads awkwardly to visitors and adds nothing. Describe your services and the area you serve in natural language instead.

Why do I appear in near me searches in some streets but not others?

Distance is a major factor, so your visibility fades as searchers move further away and closer competitors take over. That pattern is normal. Improving relevance and prominence, through categories, reviews and links, can widen the area where you appear, but it will not make you visible across all of London from one address.

Can a service-area business without a shop appear in near me searches?

Yes. A service-area business can appear for searches within the areas it lists on its Google Business Profile. Visibility still tends to be strongest near the address used to verify the profile, even when that address is hidden.
