Slough and the Heathrow corridor

SEO specialist for Slough businesses

For Slough businesses that want more enquiries from Google, whether from buyers searching nationally, travellers near Heathrow or customers in the next town. I explain what is different about search here and what I would fix first.

Slough is not one market for search but several sharing a postcode. A café on the High Street, a freight forwarder serving Heathrow and a supplier to a data centre on the Trading Estate all say they are in Slough, yet their customers search in completely different ways. I offer SEO, Google Business Profile and paid search to Slough businesses, and this page covers what I would do differently for a firm here.

How I work with Slough businesses

I am based nearby in Reading and also work from London, and the work with a Slough business is done remotely. We start with a video call, and the plan and keyword map sit in shared documents you can comment on. Because Slough is between my two bases, I check results with the location set to Slough and to the towns around it, not just from where I happen to be sitting.

How the work runs from first call to monthly reporting is the same for every client, and it is set out on the page about the areas I cover and how working together runs. If your business is in Reading itself, the page for Reading businesses is the better fit.

What changes about search in Slough

A Trading Estate address puts you among hundreds of neighbours

Slough Trading Estate is one of the largest business estates in Europe in single ownership, which means a great many firms share a small area and similar addresses. For Google Maps, that density causes two problems. Your profile competes with businesses a few hundred metres away, and mismatched unit numbers or road names make it harder for Google to be sure which listing is yours.

Write your address exactly as it appears on your signage and lease, unit number included, and use that form everywhere: your website, your profile and every directory. Getting this NAP consistency right costs little and removes a common source of duplicate or merged listings. Then check your primary Business Profile category against the firms around you; on an estate, where several businesses do similar things, the most precise category often decides who appears.

Data centre, logistics and industrial buyers rarely type the town name

Slough has a large cluster of data centres and a long history of manufacturing and distribution. If you sell to those operators, as an electrical contractor, cooling specialist, security firm or parts supplier, your buyers search by specification, standard or problem. A facilities manager in Manchester looking for a generator maintenance contract does not add “Slough”.

For these firms I put the effort into one detailed page per capability, with the standards you meet, the equipment you work on and the sectors you serve, rather than into local terms. The local side then needs only a well-kept profile and one strong service page. National suppliers and London agencies chase the same specification searches, so detail and accuracy are what separate you from them.

Heathrow is a place customers search for

Airport parking, freight, couriers, hotels and car hire are searched as “near Heathrow” far more than as “near Slough”. If part of your trade comes from the airport, give that demand its own page explaining exactly how you serve it, such as collection times, distance to each terminal or the cargo area, and how bookings work. Do not add an unstaffed second address near the airport to chase those searches; Google treats that as a breach of its guidelines.

For paid search, the airport also changes who sees your ads. Thousands of travellers pass through every day, and Google may count them as being in your area. A radius target drawn around Slough can easily take in the airport, which helps an airport hotel and wastes money for a local plumber. Decide which you are, then set the targeting to match.

Your customers cross the county line and share your postcode

The SL postcode stretches from Windsor and Maidenhead to Marlow and Gerrards Cross, and villages such as Stoke Poges and Iver sit just over the border in Buckinghamshire. People there think of themselves as living in their own village or town, not in Slough, and they search that way. A firm in Langley serving Windsor households will often struggle to appear in the map pack for a search made in Windsor, because distance counts heavily there.

If you visit customers rather than having them visit you, list the towns you genuinely cover as service areas on your profile; the entry on what a service area business is explains the rules. Write a separate page for a neighbouring town only when you have something true and specific to say about working there.

Many customers search in more than one language

Slough has one of the most ethnically diverse populations of any town in England, and many households speak Punjabi, Urdu, Polish or another language alongside English. Some customers search in English and read reviews in their first language; others search in their first language from the start. Your Search Console data and the questions you hear on the phone will tell you which pattern your customers follow.

If a second language matters, give it a properly written page rather than a machine translation, and in Google Ads use language targeting with ad text in that language. The setting decides who can see the ad; it translates nothing, so the copy and the landing page still need writing by someone fluent.

When a Reading-based consultant is the wrong choice

If you want someone on site at your unit every week, briefing your sales team and walking the warehouse, a consultant who works in person will suit you better than I will. The same is true if you need copy written natively in Punjabi, Urdu or Polish: I can plan the structure and the search side, but the words should come from a fluent writer you trust, and that is a separate supplier.

Large firms on the Trading Estate sometimes need a supplier with a team, account managers and procurement paperwork behind it. I work alone, and if your requirements call for an agency, I will say so at the first conversation rather than after you have signed.

Services that fit a Slough business

  • Local SEO, for shops, trades and clinics serving Slough and the towns around it. It explains why your map rankings depend on where your premises are, which matters in a town squeezed between Windsor, Maidenhead and the Buckinghamshire villages.
  • B2B SEO, for data centre suppliers, distributors and service firms whose buyers search nationally by specification and take months to decide.
  • Manufacturing SEO, for producers and engineering firms that need product and capability pages buyers and engineers can actually use.
  • Google search ads management, for airport-related trade or second-language campaigns, where location and language settings decide whether the budget reaches the right people.

Frequently asked questions

My unit is on Slough Trading Estate. Can I still get a verified Google Business Profile?

Yes, as long as the unit is a real premises where staff work during your stated hours. Google may ask for a short video showing your signage, the unit and proof you run the business, so make sure the sign is visible from outside. If customers never come to you and you work at their sites instead, set the profile up as a service area business with the address hidden. The entry on Business Profile verification explains the methods Google uses.

My business is in Slough but most of my customers are in Windsor. Can I present it as a Windsor business?

You can say plainly that you serve Windsor, list it as a service area and write a page about the work you do there. What you should not do is use a Windsor address you do not trade from or put Windsor in your business name on Google when it is not the name you actually trade under; both break Google's guidelines and risk suspension. Expect organic pages, not the map pack, to carry most of your Windsor searches.

Should I run Google Ads in Punjabi, Urdu or Polish as well as English?

Only if your customers actually search or buy in that language, which the calls you take and your Search Console queries will show. Start with one language and one service, with a landing page written by a fluent speaker, and compare the cost per enquiry with your English campaign. If it does not perform after a fair test, stop; a second language is a tool, not an obligation.

Does being near Heathrow change how I should set location targeting in Google Ads?

Usually, yes. By default Google can show ads to people who are in your area or have shown interest in it, which near a major airport includes many travellers who will never use a local service. For a trade or clinic, choose the option that targets people in or regularly in your locations, and consider excluding the airport itself. For airport parking, hotels or transfers, those same travellers are the customers, so you would do the opposite.
